Do I need a panel upgrade to install an EV charger?

It’s the first question almost everyone asks when they buy an electric car: does the house need a bigger panel to charge it? The short answer is often no, and the way to find out is arithmetic, not a guess. Here’s how it actually works.

A charger is a big load, but the house isn’t always full

A Level 2 charger runs on a 240-volt circuit, the same as your dryer or range, and pulls a real amount of current, usually 30 to 48 amps depending on the unit. On paper that sounds like a lot to add to a panel. But a panel’s rating isn’t a hard ceiling you hit the moment you add appliances. What matters is how much of your service is actually in use at once, and in most homes that’s less than the panel size suggests.

That’s why the answer isn’t “you have a 100-amp panel, so no.” It’s “let’s do the load calculation and see.”

What a load calculation is

A load calculation is the arithmetic your electrician should do before quoting anything on a charger. It adds up the demand from your major loads, the heating, the range, the dryer, the hot water, and so on, using the method the BC Electrical Code lays out, and compares the total to your service size. It tells us how much headroom is actually left.

Plenty of 100-amp homes come out of that math with room for a charger. Plenty of others are tight. The only way to know which one you are is to run the numbers, and that’s a short exercise, not a major undertaking. We cover the full scope on the EV charger installation page.

When the panel has room

If the load calculation shows headroom, the install is straightforward. We add a dedicated circuit sized to your charger, install the breaker, mount and wire the unit, and pull the permit. Most single-family installs are a half-day. No panel work required.

When the panel is tight

If the numbers are close, you’re not automatically stuck with a full service upgrade. There’s a middle option a lot of people don’t know about.

A load-management device lets the charger share a circuit’s capacity with another big load, usually the range or dryer. When both want to run at once, the device backs the charger off, then lets it resume when the other load finishes. Your car still charges overnight, the panel never gets overloaded, and you avoid a service upgrade entirely. For a car that sits in the driveway for twelve hours, a brief pause in charging is invisible.

This solves a large share of the “my panel is full” cases. It’s the first thing we look at before recommending anything bigger.

When you genuinely need an upgrade

Sometimes the math really does point to a panel or service upgrade. It usually happens in one of these situations:

  • You’re adding the charger on top of other new heavy loads, most often a heat pump, and the combined demand tips the service over.
  • Your home is on an older 60- or 100-amp service that’s already close to full before the charger.
  • Your existing panel has no physical space for another breaker and can’t take a tandem.

In those cases we’ll show you the load calculation and explain why, rather than just handing you a number. If it turns out you’re adding both a charger and a heat pump, doing the upgrade once and wiring both to the new service is usually cheaper than two separate visits. The rebate angle

One more reason to do this properly: BC Hydro and CleanBC rebates pay out on permitted installs by a licensed contractor. Charge overnight, not all at once

One reason panels handle chargers better than people expect is timing. Your car sits in the driveway for ten or twelve hours overnight, so the charger doesn’t need to run flat out. Many units let you set a charging schedule or a lower amperage, which spreads the draw and makes it easier for a service to absorb. If you’re worried about capacity, dialing the charger back a few amps often costs you nothing in real-world convenience. The car is still full by morning, and it takes pressure off the panel.

The bottom line

Don’t assume an EV charger means a new panel. A lot of the time it doesn’t, and even when the panel is tight, a load-management device often bridges the gap without a service upgrade. The way to know is a load calculation, which we do before quoting so you’re not paying for capacity you don’t need.
