What it takes to wire a hot tub in BC

Most people budget carefully for the tub and the pad and then find out the electrical is its own project. It isn’t a plug-in appliance. A hot tub is one of the larger continuous loads you can add to a house, it sits outdoors in the wet, and people get into it with bare skin. The code treats it accordingly.
Here’s what’s actually involved, in the order it tends to matter.
Start at the panel, not the deck
The first question isn’t where the tub goes. It’s whether your service can carry it.
A typical 240-volt tub wants a dedicated circuit in the 40 to 50 amp range, and it runs that load for long stretches while it heats. Your specific tub’s requirement is on its data plate and in the manual, and it varies more than people expect between a small two-seater and a big unit with multiple pumps.
On a 200-amp service in a house that isn’t already loaded up, that’s usually straightforward. On a 100-amp service, especially one that’s already feeding a range, a dryer, and maybe an EV charger, it often isn’t. The calculation is the same one we walked through in how many amps does my house need, and the answer decides whether this is a one-day job or a two-part job.
The other panel question is physical space. Plenty of panels have capacity on paper but no room left for a two-pole breaker, sometimes because someone already doubled up to make space. If the panel is full or the service is tight, a panel and service upgrade comes first, and that’s typically $4,000 to $6,000 depending on the service, the panel location, and what BC Hydro’s side involves. We’ll give you a firm number once we’ve seen it.
What the install itself includes
Assuming the capacity is there, the electrical scope is fairly consistent:
A dedicated circuit. Nothing else on it. The tub gets its own breaker and its own run.
GFCI protection. Required, non-negotiable, and the reason is obvious. Depending on the tub and the setup this is either a GFCI breaker at the panel or protection at the disconnect.
A disconnect. An outdoor-rated, lockable disconnect that lets you kill power to the tub without walking to the panel. The code sets both where it has to be visible from and how far it has to sit from the water, so its position is decided by the rules rather than by what looks tidy. We place it when we see the site.
Bonding. Metal parts in and around the tub get bonded together so there’s no voltage difference between things a wet person can touch at the same time. This is easy to do during the install and genuinely awkward to add afterwards.
Weather-rated everything. Outdoor cable, outdoor boxes, proper sealing where the run leaves the building. Water in an exterior box is one of the most common causes of the nuisance tripping we described in why does my breaker keep tripping.
What drives the price
The tub’s amperage matters less than you’d think. What actually moves the number is the run.
A tub twenty feet from the panel on the other side of a basement wall is cheap. A tub at the back of the yard, with the panel at the front of the house, on a finished basement ceiling, with a trench through a patio, is not. Distance means bigger conductors and more labour, and buried runs mean a trench at the right depth in proper conduit.
The other variable is the panel work, which is why we always ask about the panel before quoting the tub.
Yes, it needs a permit
New circuits need an electrical permit and an inspection, and a hot tub circuit is exactly the kind of work an inspector wants to see. That means the wiring gets checked before it’s buried and covered, which is the point.
Who issues that permit depends on your city. In some Metro Vancouver municipalities it’s the city itself, and everywhere else it’s Technical Safety BC. Either way it’s our job to pull and close it, and it should appear as a line on your quote rather than quietly not exist.
If you skip it, the usual costs come due later. Your insurer can push back on a claim involving unpermitted work, and a buyer’s inspector will notice a hot tub circuit with no paperwork behind it.
Sequence it right and it’s painless
The mistake we see most often is calling the electrician after the pad is poured and the tub is sitting on it. By then the run has to work around whatever’s already there, and the disconnect location is constrained by what’s been built.
The easy version goes: pick the tub, get the data plate, have us look at the panel and the route before anything is poured, then schedule the wiring so the trench happens while the ground is already open for the pad. We do this alongside deck and yard work regularly as part of renovation and rewiring jobs, and coordinating it early costs nothing.
We install these across the Lower Mainland, and the yard layouts vary a lot by area. A Langley property with room to trench is a different job than a North Vancouver lot on a slope with the panel on the far side of the house.

Check the panel first, budget for the run rather than the amperage, and get the permit.
