Why does my breaker keep tripping?

A tripping breaker is one of the most common calls we get, and it’s also the one people most often talk themselves out of. The breaker goes, you walk down to the panel, you flip it back, and the lights come on. Problem solved, apparently. Then it happens again next week.

Here’s the thing worth understanding before you reset it one more time: a breaker that trips is not broken. It’s a safety device that just did exactly what it was built to do. Something on that circuit gave it a reason. The useful question isn’t how to stop the tripping, it’s what the breaker is protecting you from.

The four reasons a breaker trips

Almost every trip falls into one of four buckets, and they are not equally urgent.

Overload. The circuit is being asked to carry more current than it’s rated for. A 15-amp kitchen circuit running a kettle, a toaster, and an air fryer at once is a textbook example. The breaker heats up, the thermal element gives way, and it opens. This is the benign version, and it’s usually obvious because the trip happens at a predictable moment, when you turn on the second thing.

Short circuit. A hot conductor touching a neutral or another hot, somewhere it shouldn’t. Current spikes hard and the breaker’s magnetic element opens it almost instantly. Shorts often come with a bang, a flash, or a scorch mark. This one is not benign.

Ground fault. Current leaking to ground, through a damp box, a nicked cable, or an appliance with a failing winding. If the circuit is GFCI protected, that device trips well before the breaker does, which is the whole point of GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoors.

Arc fault. A loose connection or damaged conductor arcing rather than shorting outright. Arcing is what starts wire fires, and it draws too little current for a standard breaker to notice. AFCI breakers detect the signature of an arc and open the circuit. They’re required on a lot of residential circuits now, and if you have a recently updated panel you probably have several.

Sorting overload from fault, without tools

You can usually narrow it down yourself before you call anyone.

Unplug everything on the circuit, reset the breaker, and see what happens. If it holds with nothing plugged in, you’re looking at a load problem or a bad appliance. Add things back one at a time until it trips, and you’ve found your culprit. A single space heater on a bedroom circuit will do it every time.

If the breaker trips immediately with nothing plugged in, stop. That’s a fault in the wiring itself, not a load problem, and repeatedly resetting it is putting current into a circuit that has something wrong with it. Leave it off and get it looked at.

Two other signals mean stop right away: a burning or hot-plastic smell anywhere near the panel or an outlet, and a breaker or cover plate that’s warm to the touch. Those are not “watch it for a week” situations.

When it’s the breaker itself

Breakers do wear out. A breaker that has tripped many times, or one that’s twenty or thirty years old, can weaken and start opening below its rated current. That looks exactly like a mystery trip: nothing changed, the load is modest, and it goes anyway.

This is more common in older panels, and it’s much more common in the panel brands that have a known history of failing to trip properly. When the real answer is capacity, not the circuit

Sometimes there’s nothing wrong with the circuit at all. The house has outgrown its service.

The pattern looks like this: it’s not one breaker, it’s several, at different times. You’ve added a hot tub or a heat pump or an EV charger since the panel went in. The panel is full and someone has doubled up on a tandem breaker to make room. The lights dim when the dryer starts.

That’s a capacity conversation, not a repair. A 100-amp service that was generous in 1978 is tight in 2026, and no amount of resetting fixes arithmetic. What we actually do on a trip call

Tracing a trip is measurement, not guesswork. We isolate the circuit, map what’s actually on it (which is rarely what the panel legend claims), and test insulation resistance and continuity to find where current is going that shouldn’t be. Loose terminations, a screw through a cable behind drywall, a backstabbed outlet that’s finally let go, and water in an exterior box account for most of what we find.

Then we fix the cause and confirm the circuit holds under real load, rather than reset it and hope. That’s the repairs and troubleshooting side of the work, and it’s the part where local experience saves you money, because the failure patterns repeat by housing stock and era. A 1970s Burnaby split-level has different problems than a downtown condo.

The short version

Reset it once. If it holds and you know what you overloaded, you’re fine. If it trips again with the circuit empty, if anything smells hot, or if it’s more than one breaker going at odd times, that’s the point where resetting stops being maintenance and starts being a gamble.
